  1. Hormones are chemical messengers that are produced in one place in the body and have an effect somewhere else in the body.

    So, when a hormone approaches a target cell, there is a receptor on the cell membrane or inside the cell.  When the hormone docks into this receptor, it causes a cascade of reactions within the cell.  This can include the changes in the shape of some proteins.  These proteins, with their shape changed, are now able activate or deactivate specific genes by binding to promoter regions or enhancer/silencer regions.
