  1. They're shot through the head.

  2. Its NOT a gun. Ignore the people who say that. Its a lethal injection, and I would never be able to watch it. People just sit with their money and their stupid fluffy hats with bouncing sh*t coming out of the top and dont realize what the horses are being put through! I didnt make it to the television in time but when i found out this morning i was heartbroken. Its so sad how people put young horses in like that for MONEY. Its really depressing. I would be so mordified if my favorite horse on this planet was put into a big shindig like that and had to be put down for breaking to ankles.

    I'll pray for Eight Bells.

  3. Its a needle to the neck in the carotid artery.  A barbiturate that is similar to anesthesia.  Animals are asleep in 15 seconds and  running with the Gods in about one minute.  Its painless for the horse!  Incredibaly painful for those of us left to deal with this injustice of the worl.

  4. Lethal injection.

  5. A injection of barbiturate that puts the horse to sleep quickly, and causes death within 1 min.   It might be better then the current system we used for lethal injection in humans.

  6. The best-case scenarios for euthanizing a horse both involve intravenous barbiturate overdose. A horse undergoing surgery can be given the overdose via the already-established IV if it becomes clear during the surgery that the horse will not survive. It is also common for a horse to be euthanized by intravenous injection outside of surgery. As soon as the drug is given, the horse loses consciousness, and its pain is relieved almost instantly. This can be a comforting thought for the owners.

Beyond these scenarios, things can get a bit more difficult. If your horse is badly injured or in significant pain it can be dangerous to attempt to use an injection. If it is in shock, its circulation may be too impaired to transport the drug to its brain and heart, and the veins may be difficult or impossible to locate to administer it. In this situation, the veterinarian may need to use a .22-caliber pistol to euthanize the animal.

Note:  Eight Belles was euthanized by injection.

  7. A lethal dose of barbital injection or some other heart stopping drug that is fast and painless, Thank God for this as Eight Belles was in great pain and quickly put down. A gut wrenching position for her owner but most humane.

  8. they get the needle
