  1. Use Rit Dye, you can find it at any drug store or places like Target or Wal-Mart in all kinds of colors.  When dyeing the garment use a large plastic bin, with old towels or a trash bags underneath it to avoid stains if you spill, mix the Rit solution with water like the directions say add the garment and soak until it comes out the color you want.  You may have to add more dye to get the color you want but start out with the less is more concept and add the dye as you go along until you get it right.  Good luck!

  2. yep, everyone else is right...RIT dye.

  3. Rite Dye is found at places like Walmart.  I'm not sure what department it's in possible in the craft area.  Follow the directions for best results and the first time you wash the clothes make sure it is alone in case some of the dye bleeds, it will ruin your other clothes.

  4. First, you have to make sure the garment you want to dye is capable of being dyed. Typically, natural fibers will dye better than synthetic ones.

A good one to use is good ol' RIT dye, which can be bought at any drug store in the sewing section. It's very cheap--I think about a dollar a package, which will dye about 4 big garments.

  5. Rit dye is easy to find, but it is not a very good choice for dyeing cotton garments, because it fades with every washing, and it will bleed in the laundry forever, ruining other garments. Garments that have been dyed with Rit dye should be washed only by hand, separately, in cool water. You have better things to do with your time than hand-wash your clothing, don't you?

Instead, you need to buy a permanent dye. There are many good brands, but none of them are sold in the grocery store. You will have to go to a crafts store, or possible a fabric store. Look for Tulip One Step Fashion Dye, or Dylon Permanent Dye, or Dylon Cold Dye, or Procion MX dye. If you are in Europe or Australia, look for Dylon Machine Dye (which unfortunately is not available in North America).  All of these brands of dye contain good fiber reactive dye, which is set with washing soda, rather than hot water, and which will last for years longer than Rit dye without fading. It is even safe to wash garments that have been dyed with these dyes in HOT water, all mixed together, after the first couple of washings; the dye will not fade in hot water.

For the best prices and best choice of colors, buy Procion dye by mail-order from a good dye supplier such as Dharma Trading Company. They also sell a wide range of dyeable white cotton and rayon clothing, from bathing suits to fancy dresses, including plenty of t-shirts.

Be careful in choosing what garments to dye. Polyester will not dye. Choose only machine washable clothing that is made of 100% natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, hemp, or bamboo.
