  1. id definetly just walk her alot! the first day i took her out id lunge her first to get out the spunk idk if shes got any but yeah. then id ride her just at the walk to alomost 2 -3 times a week after each ride id put some cooling gel all over her to minimize pain that she may havea fter riding. then after the week or so if u think shes progressing then id try trotting and so forth just reapaeting the cooling technique but you should ask your trainer or look up info on websties good luck

  2. Ask your vet about the soundness of you horse and feed increases. Record's it's pulse, heart rate, and temperature. Start by walking the horse. Watch for blowing and other signs of fatigue. When the horse can walk for an hour without fatigue begin five minute trot sets followed by at least five minutes of walking. Slowly increase the amount of trot sets. When you horse can Trot for five minutes and walk for five minutes without fatigue, begin adding five minute canter sets followed by five minute walk sets. When your horse can walk five minutes, trot five minutes, wake five minutes, and then canter five minutes (repeat) for one hour you are ready to condition specifically for your sport. Take things very slowly. All conditioning is very hard on horses.

  3. start off with 5 min sessions then 10 then 15...........walk 5 trot 5 walk 5......next day  walk 5 trot 5 lope 2 lope 2 walk 10...........etc....trotting up hill is great too

  4. First keep her on a strict diet. Gradually adding some grains and supplements as needed.

First week start with lunging.  Lunge her in both directions for about 1/2 an hour every day for about a week, with one break day.

Second week add in some light riding.  Alternate daily (again with one break day)between 1/2 hour lunge sessions and 1/2 hour walk trot riding sessions.

Third week add cantering to your riding sessions and extend to 45 minutes.

Fourth week extend riding sessions to 1 hour.

Fifth Week go to only 2 lunge sessions per week and 4 riding sessions.

Sixth Week ride just about every day, (with one break day a week). If you rider hunters or jumpers, start to add some small fences.

In you riding sessions, be sure to do a lot of suppling exercises including, circles, serpentines, pole grids, bending, etc.

And just be sure to be careful in the heat!

  5. Walking is good however there are multiple factors:

-A Good Feed is a must, a good feed means you do not have to add ANY supplements expect if the horse as a specific condition, i.e. sweating, arthritis, etc. I use southern states, in particular legends, but triple crown and omalene work very well too. Textured feed may be too much at first

-If you can not find a good feed that caters to your horse's every need(coat, weight, energy, muscle, etc.) get the best possible and add Red Cell (or similar suppliments), it helps muscle and tissue healing and devolptment (only when the horse is working harder than the inital stages)

-Uphill walking takes less time and improves cardio as well as hindquarter muscles

-In general steady pace wins the race, long periods of BRISK fast walking is great for out of shape equines. DO NOT LET HIM SLOW OR MOVE SLUGGISH until he is cooling out.

-Troting should be kept as a fast consistant pace, not slower than the brisk walk, this often happens without the rider relizing it because the 'tempo' has changed.

-Walk 3-5 days a week spaced out by a day or two depending on your own work, chores, obligations, etc. He needs time to rebuild Muscle tissues

    - do not canter until the horse can sustain an extended or fast trot for more than 20-30 minutes. Trotting can be done on level ground.

-Cantering should remain consitant and ask for extension and flexion. This will make him supple and improve his muscles faster.

-Ride over hills in all paces, improving his balance and strength.

-Do NOT go uphill if you do not feel balanced

-Lunging is also great, working him over poles will make him lift and extension, more muscle movement. I recommend getting a cavasson if your going to do this, as doing it in a halter can throw him off balance and put stress on his inside tendons and joints.

    - be careful! Unfit horses pull and damage tendons and muscles easily, if the horse is breathing hard, sweating profusely, their jugula/flank/chest is hot give him a break

-to cut down on cool down time, walk him out but give him a quick hose off and sponge his neck, flank, chest, and armpits. Save the kidneys for last. Try to bathe with cool but not ice cold water, this can cause the horse to tense his now supple muscles and cause him to constrict his tendons.

Hope this helps and good luck with your equine pal! :)

  6. trotting and going up hills

  7. Make most of your workout in trotting that's the best way!

  8. I know what thats like! The horse I just bought was out of work for 7 months too--the people I bought him from started getting him back in shape during April and May. Now I'm just finishing up. I think it's important to start with short workouts that get longer and longer. I would do a lot of lateral work and bending. The key thing will be rebuilding her muscles. The best way to do this is to lunge or ride your horse in a slightly hilly area. Having her trot up and down low to medium grade slopes is really going to force her to use those long forgotten muscles. I hope this suggestion helps!
