  1. Word has a pretty good automatic footnote numbering and formatting mechanism.  It will automatically maintain the numbering sequence no matter what you do to the footnotes.  It will also do its darnedest to keep the footnotes on the page (and out of the footer, too), as well as give them a format different from the normal text.

To put in a Word footnote (Word XP (2002) and adjacent versions.  Word Vista probably has something similar.):

1.Position the cursor where you want the footnote reference to go.

2.Click on the Insert->Reference->Footnote menu item.

    3.Click Insert.

    4.Type the footnote.

The footnotes are best viewed in Print Layout view, at least until you get used to how they work.

    Hope that helps.

P.S. Just to let you know, the easiest way to superscript something is this:

1.Select the text you want to make a superscript.

    2.Press CTRL/SHIFT/=

To make it normal text again, repeat the process.

To make a subscript, press CTRL/= instead.

  2. Word will automatically insert a number and move the cursor to the bottom of the page for a footnote if you go to the Insert menu, Reference, Footnote.  You will also be able to select whether you want a footnote (bottom of page) or endnote (end of document), and how you want them numbered (i.e., 1,2,3...; i, ii, iii...; a,b,c...)

If you just want to do superscript numbers, that can be done by going to the Format menu, Fonts, then checking the Superscript box.
