Recently have begun driving peugeot 206 and have noticed car handbreak to be very slack/when pulled comes much further back than it should. My father and I have not got a clue how to locate the mechanism to tighten it with and need help, please include as much detail as possible, thanks!

  1. If you'll remove the rubber boot / cover from the handle, you'll see an adjustment rod near it's pivot point. =^ )

  2. Be aware that generally Peugeot handbrakes have been designed to have more travel than your typical japanese car. You can tighten up the handbrake to make it feel like a handbrake from a japanese car, however this often prevents the automatic adjustment from working and so the handbrake will loose its effectiveness.

To check if your handbrake is properly adjusted, check first that it holds well and if you put it on as hard as you can, it does not move full travel (which may be 13 to 16 clicks).

To check it is off enough, jack up the car and turn the wheels. they should turn freely, and should start to bind when the handbrake is on about 3 clicks.

If you feel that the handbrake travels too far before coming on, try loosening the adjuster first, and using the foot brake a number of times. If the handbrake has been previously adjusted too hard, slackening it right off will allow the foot brake to make the automatic adjusters work and take up the slack in the brake linings. Then adjust the handbrake back up, but probably not as far as it was.

Note that many peugeot handbrakes are adjusted underneath, so check there before you go prising the inside of your car apart!.
