  1. When you do the FAFSA, you'll be applying for the Pell Grant at the same time.

  2. Yes. The Pell Grant is one of several forms of Federal Financial Aid that you apply for by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, the FAFSA. There is no other way to apply for it.

When you complete the FAFSA, the Department of Education will compute an Expected Family Contribution code, which will be sent to the financial aid office of your school. Financial aid will use that code to determine what forms of aid you are eligible to receive.

If your EFC is below 4041, you will be classified as an applicant with "exceptional need", and you will be eligible for forms of assistance known as "need-based" financial aid.

Even if your score is not below 4041, you will still qualify to receive other, non-need-based forms of aid, most likely, the opportunity to borrow from the Stafford Loan program. This is a government-created loan program that offers the best educational loans at the most reasonable costs. The Stafford does not require a credit check or a cosigner, and has very favorable terms.

For more information, read through the US Department of Education booklet called "Funding Education Beyond High School: The Guide to Federal Student Aid". I've attached a link to the online version, or you can request it from any financial aid office or high school guidance department.

    Good luck to you!
