How do i arrange my funds?

I plan to go to US for my education purposes. How can I arrange my funds in India so that I can have easy access to them while my stay at US.

I have savings accounts in a few banks and have got a visa debit card from one. Also have a HSBC supplementary credit card with a limit of Rs.20,000/=.

In what ways can I arrange these funds?

Do I have to take them with me to US as travelers cheques?

Or can I withdraw money from US using these electronic cards? If so will the charge be higher?

What other ways do I have to get my funds in US without carrying them as exchanged dollers?

Please help me.

  1. Put the money you want to have access to into the account with the debit card.  You can withdraw money as you need it.  You can transfer money online.  don't mess with traveller's checks.  They aren't worth the trouble.  You can't really get your money if they are stolen, anyway, and almost no one takes them anymore.

Check with the credit card companies as to whether things will be more, but when I went to Europe, it wasn't.  The cards were the easiest and least expensive way to use my money.

The credit card is a good idea for spending money, but don't use it to withdraw cash.  They usually charge you a nice fee for cash advances.  The only thing is, you need to have access to cash to pay off the credit card every month.
