  1. go to Thailand

  2. learn to breathe, and then don't seek it. "I" become (Title) "scholar" is the selfish ego grasping for recognition and power.  An illusion on a grand level.

First become a practitioner or a bihikku if you will.

  3. First, become a Buddhist...

    Next, start to study....

    Be well.

  4. Burry your head in the sand, for starters.

  5. Many universities now have a Buddhist studies department, or at least a small group of scholars who research Buddhist topics. Often, these are research-oriented departments serving primarily graduate students and researchers.

In the Western United States, alone, Stanford, UCLA, and UC Berkeley all have dedicated Buddhist studies departments.

The scholars I know seem to share several traits in common:

    - Fluency in Chinese and/or Sanskrit and/or Pali

    - Probable fluency in a country-specific language, depending on focus (Korean, Thai, Japanese, etc.)

    - Extended residency in an Asian country of focus

    - Strong background in at least one of these academic disciplines: archeology, anthropology, history, philosophy, psychology, or medicine, depending on area of focus

There are a variety of scholarly publications on Buddhism and the first link, below, will take you to a partial listing of them.

The second link will take you to a good listing of Buddhist scholarly bibliographies.

The final link provides access to a whole slew of academic-related information. Very cool stuff!

Me? Very lapsed academic (a long time ago).

  6. go to school and take theology with a bent towards the Buddhist religion

  7. Find a corner of the world where you can meditate on life without saying a word. See how life comes to you and teaches you of it's mysteries.

  8. Do a PhD about Buddhism then go for academic jobs.
