  1. Study hard as undergraduate, doctoral programs very competitive and you will need good grades to get in. You GRE (graduate record examination) score will also be important. You can go to any bookstore and buy a test prep book. I recommend Cracking the GRE by the Princeton review. Also, while completing your undergraduate degree, form relationships with your professors because you will also need letters of recommendation. Lastly, the matter of "goodness of fit" is important. Doctoral programs are pretty specific in what they emphasize and it is important that your interests match to some degree with the specializations of the professors at any program to which you might apply. So go to the history department's website of any school that you may be considering applying to and find out what their professors specialize. To find out what schools offer PhDs in history, go to gradschools.com.
