  1. You need speed and good hands to catch the ball

  2. I was in the same boat as you, now i'm the team's #1 possession receiver. I'm still small (5'8") and slow (4.8-4.9) but my freshman and sophomore years all i did was work on my routes. Learn defensive coverages and how to beat them, be a SMART football player since you're not an "athletic" receiver. Find holes in zone coverages, how to get off the line and use your hands in man-to-man. Then my junior year i started hitting weights hard, boosted my speed and agility a bit but added 15 pounds of muscle. That has been the best thing to happen to me. The extra weight will help you shed a defender and stay on your perfect, crisp route you've ran time and time again. Run great routes and let your quarterback know you'll always be there to bail him out and you'll get the ball and do well with it.

  3. Speed is key for smaller wide receivers.  If you're going against taller defensive backs, then you'll need the speed to make up for the height difference.  How do you get faster?  Just sprint.  Do sprints regularly.  Also do some strength workouts for your legs.  And did I mention sprinting?  That'll make you faster.

Continue working on route running and catching.  There's no such thing as running a route too well or having too good of hands.  There's ALWAYS room for improvement.

Don't worry too much about doing any serious strength workouts to improve your running right now.  Wait until it's required of you.  I don't think you wanna start doing serious workouts until, I'd say, mid-way through second year of high school.
