  1. There is a glut of teachers in NJ.  If you still want to do it, take the college classes and do the student teaching to get a teaching certificate.

The state of NJ encourages 'alternate route' but you'll take the PRAXIS, fill out forms, have them notarized 100X, pay fees, wait a year for the state to issue you a Certificate of Eligibility and then guess what? You won't find a school that will hire you (with the possible exception of an inner-city school up in Newark or thereabouts).

The best chance you have is if you go into Special Ed.

  2. Definitely visit the NJ department of education website.  If you are out of college, look into Alternative Licensure.

To teach high school, you need 30 credits in the subject you want to teach, and you need to pass the Praxis exam in that subject.

  3. Heh, yeah.  The poster above me is kind of correct (takes 12 weeks for the state to issue license-unless you get DENIED liek I just found out I did, no clue why, have my master's, aced the praxis, but getting through on the phone is IMPOSSIBLE).  It's a long haul, and there are way too many teachers.  Go for high school Science and Math.  The odds are better, there.

The state education website outlines the steps.
