  1. You really need to go to college to become a good animator - I suggest finding an art school with good classes in computer animation. It takes years to learn the detailed skills you need to be a good animator. If you don't want to do a degree, at least do a year-long course to get yourself acquainted with the software and essential techniques. But the usual path into the industry for a young person is a college degree during which they take an internship with an animation company, and you also need to produce a showreel to demonstrate your skills to employers, which is also built up at college.

Being a good artist is a great bonus, but you don't need excellent drawing skills to be a computer animator. You do need good observation skills and to understand movement and acting (animating is pretty much the process of acting though another character).

Salary varies wildly with your talent and experience. You probably won't earn much starting out but there's a lot of room for promotion and wage increase.

  2. Well first you have to spend a few hundred to a few thousand dollars on software. Good animation software is the key to a successful start in animation. If your short on $$, you can always use a free program to draw and animate those things like, "Monkey Jam". Its a great prog to start with, but eventually you will want to move up to Adobe Flash or something in that realm. The learning part is easy though. Theres literally hundreds of thousands of animation tutorials available online. As far as knowing how much animators get paid, it depends on skills and experience. practice makes $$! :)
