  1. If you want to become a trainer the hard way, then you need to work on the track for 5 years as a groom before you can take the trainer's test through the USTA (United States Trotting Association) www.ustrotting.com.  And even then you have to get 5 trainer's signatures before you can take that.  There are 3 tracks in PA...The Meadows near Washington, Pocono Downs and Chester raceway which is new.  There are quite a few standardbred farms also.  I worked in the harness racing industry for many years and then worked at Hanover Shoe Farms near Gettysburg for 3 1/2 years.  I took care of LIndy Lane, The Panderosa, SJ's Caviar and Andover Hall to name a few.  If you want to start working as a groom your best bet is to call the racetrack and see if anyone is looking for any help.  Depending on what part of PA you're in, you could also try Freehold or the Meadowlands.   I know for a fact that there is also a school that offers a course in NY to get your trainer's license at SUNY Morrisville.  You take all the necessary courses and get some practical experience and after it is all said and done, you will have your trainer's license.  Good luck with your journey and I hope this helps your out.

  2. I don't think college is necessary to become a trainer, nor do I know of any college programs specifically geared to a degree in harness horse racing training. This is the kind of job where you try to get a job working for an established trainer and learn the ropes from that person. I don't know what part of the state has the most farms where harness horses are raised. However,  you don't want to be where the horses are raised. You'd want to live near the track to train and race. The only harness track in PA I know of is the Meadows near Washington, PA.
