I forgot my purse at a restaurant 2 weeks ago, I realized it as I was getting home, I rushed back to get it, only to realize it was gone. It was in a rough area, so i figured it would already be gone. It was, in my purse i had a bunch of company checks i had to put in the mail, as well as my social security card. I just found out through my boss that some of the checks were scanned copied and cashed, i never reported to the police that i lost my purse, would it be too late to still report it. and how do i block social from being used, although at this point i already have bad credit, which i am working on, how can i prevent identity theft, and someone making my credit even worst?

  1. I am not sure about blocking your social security number.  You might have to apply for a new one.  I would report the bag as stolen asap. It doesn't matter how long just make sure you get a report in.

  2. Place a freeze on your credit account at each of the three credit bureaus.  And NEVER carry your SS card around.

  3. You must make a police report, contact the Federal Trade commission and the social security office also contact the Credit bureau.  Once you get the copies of your report and documentation from the FTC and SS make sure to keep the copies in a safe place and if need you might have to show to IRS when you file next year, in case someone start working with you SSN.

  4. You can report the theft of your purse late as well as the use of some of the items in the purse.  You should cancel all of your present credit cards and ask the SSA to issues you a new SS card.  They may require that the SS number be used illegally before they issue a new number.
