  1. 1. Use a router and configure it according to the manual. If using Wireless use WPA encryption. WEP has been hacked

    2. Install firewall software. Zone Alarm basic fire wall is free and works well

    3. Install Anti-virus software - set it to scan your machine every night. AVGFree works well

    4. Install and use Anti Spyware software - SuperAntiSpyware is free and gets the job done

You need to do all the steps - Routers and firewalls can keep people out, but if you have a Trojan or a virus already in the machine or download one accidentally from the net or an e-mail, they can bypass the firewall and router and let people in.

  2. This is the same thing that happened to me and i couldnt find a proper solution any where, so i was just messing around in the wireless router settings (to get to your settings type your ip address in the address bar) then i went into wireless settings, then i clicked setup access list (this is where you lock your router to your mac address). Then it will say available access stations and trusted wireless stations. On that page there will be something that says turn access control on and it will have a check box next to it, tick that box, then in the list of wireless stations click the pc that is yours you will be able to tell it is yours by seeing your device name or yout mac address. If your PC/Laptop  isnt in the available wireless stations then you can add it manually. If your connecting to the wireless router through a cable then you just tick the box next to 'turn access control on'. When you lock the wireless router to mac address's you dont even need a security key because it has to have your permission to access the internet through your wireless router.

If you have any problems trying to do that, or if i didnt write it clear enough just message me, and il message you straight back.

  3. FIREWALL........

  4. You do not block IP addresses.  No one does.

I presume you have a wireless access point providing wireless LAN at your residence.

If others are freeloading onto it, you have failed to implement security (encryption, preshare key, MAC address validation) steps and the freeloaders found it and are hacking in.

Go back to your manual and follow the directions for installing all of the security steps and freeloaders will go away.

Be sure to use a wired line to your router when you configure it for security (or any other configuration for that matter).

  5. GTB is incorrect.

Zone Firewall and many others provide access to blocking specific AND blocks of IP addresses.

    works well, according to ZDnet.com
