How do i boot up my windows xp home edition after a file was corrupted?

A storm caused a power outage & corrupted a msconfig file and now I can't boot up my pc How do i fix it without loosing info on my hardrive.

  1. What is the name of the file?  If you know the name of the file do a search on another XP machine for it, save it to a thumb drive and then boot your computer in safe mode (F8 while booting) and then paste the file to the same location you found it on the other computer.  Reboot.  :)


  2. Ok, thats simple.

    Boot your computer in safe mood (press F8 when your computer is starting then select safe mood)

    when it started,

    Click Start, Run. In the run box, type "sfc" without the quotes

    and press "Enter". When the System File Checker starts, check the

    option "Extract one file from installation disk". Enter the filename

    in the box. msconfig.exe

    The file restores to the "C:\Windows\System" folder
