  1. You have a LOT of research to do before you even think of breeding bettas.  First of all, no, bettas do not live in tiny puddles.  This is a harmful MYTH.

If you want to breed fish for profit, start out with livebearers.  Even then, you will need a LOT of supplies, not to mention quality stock to work with, none of which is cheap.  I suggest looking into other ways to make money.

  2. It all depends on the type of betta you are planning to breed. First off, do as much research from as many sources as you can. Not all sources have the most reliable information. Next you will need many tanks, many glass jars, and all other fish equipment necessary. Initially it might cost you quite a bit of money to start up the tanks to house your bettas, and to have suitable tanks and jars for you babies to go into, but you might earn it back if you breed good quality stock.

I suggest buying bettas from a private breeder, and get pure bred bettas, not cross breeds. It is best to get about 4 brothers and sisters of each kind of betta. 2 boys and 2 girls, this will ensure you will get at least 1 breeding pair. But for the rest read this site, they have awesome info on breeding bettas.
