How do i build a custom fence?

Question

i would like to build a fence along the perimeter of my property, however, i have decided to custom make the panels instead of buying the 6x8 sheets at a home improvement store. do i run parallel with the ground or step them?

I have never built a custom built fence either, but trying to visualise trying to build a fence on a slope and still maintain the vertical, it really would be difficult. I would suggest you build them stepped, because I think it will be easier, and it will look a lot more professionally finished.

parallel will look better with vertical posts, stepped will just visually exaggerate the fact that it is sloped and be weaker

My opinion is the exact opposite of the first answer. I prefer the look of the fence being parallel to the ground over the stepped look. I think that is one of the advantages of going custom over the prefab panels.
