i want to build a drum set. how do i do this? does anyone know where i can buy pieces, a site with plans? i would prefer to build a metal one instead of wooden. heres my idea, give me feedback, : i want to put together a kit using pieces from kid drum sets. is the hardware the same as from a real drumset? or is it just cheap plastic?

  1. go to Guitar Center ask where the drums are and you can maybe get some supplies and they might also sell the drums but like not with the stands and stuff.. the hardware if you find a good one it will be like the regular drumset.

  2. a kids/junior kit will probably be of the cheapest material. i know the lowest end of non-juniors are pretty bad. (hardware breaks easy, cymbals crack and bend quickly...) you could get a junior kit and build up from there. the biggest problem is that the actual drums are pretty small. 18-20 inch bass drum, 15 inch floor tom. all tiny and overall in the end a waste. unless you buy all new hardware, heads, cymbals, pedal, etc.. the only salvageable thing would be the shells but even then bigger is usually better. in my experience anyway..

    but

it all depends on what you're going to use it for i think. ..if you want a "real" drum set to use as an instrument or if you want something small and cheap($) for a kid to beat up on.

if you want a real kit, building from a kids kit isn't a good idea. maybe for a beginner or as a hobbyist but you would eventually want something more that can really take a beating and still sound good.

for a child's toy, I'm not too sure.

I'm also not sure what you mean by "build" either. do you mean getting the drum kit piece by piece and assemble a custom drum kit or putting together found things like pipes and oil barrels?

if you could elaborate a bit more, i could give a less vague answer.
