I would use a galvanized pipe, 1" or 2" diameter depending on your preference. They are fairly inexpensive and have many couplings including the bottom circular base. I would use 10' so you can form an oval with it. If you need padding, there are tubular insulation foam insulators to cushion hard impacts. They all can be purchased at Home Depot.
