  1. Import the video over firewire to your video editor. You will connect the DV port of the camcorder to the firewire port of your computer. Something other than MovieMaker - which I don't think can handle HDV. Sony Vegas and pretty much any other video editor can - but be sure you see that it states that it can handle HDV.

    Edit.

Use WinDVD or simialr DVD authoring application to burn the DVD in your computer's DVD writable drive. It will downsample the video to standard definition and write the appropriate VOB/VRO or whatever standard definition DVD files are needed. Most DVD players do not understand how to deal with .avi, .mp4 or .mov type files. The DVD authoring/burning apps take care of the DVD-readable file creation for you.

Presuming your 1080i video is clear and your DVD player is connected to your TV with component (RGB) cables - or HDMI - this will be the clearest standard def you've ever seen.

    A couple of alerts:

    1) You did not tell us what kind of computer you have. HDV - as with DV - imports at real time or slower. It depends on your CPU as the HDV stream is a lot of crunching for the CPU.

    2) DV uses ~14 gig of hard drive space per hour of imported video. HDV uses ~ 4x that... The files are large. You probably already recognized this.

    3) Rendering out the video and downsampling to standard def takes time - again, this is very CPU intensive.
