How do i change a picture to black and white but keep the color on one object without using photo-shop?

such as my friend had a picture where it was black and white and she had an apple in her hand that was still in color.

but she says she didnt use photo shop, is that possible?

  2. One basic technique is to start with a color picture and then create a selection around the object to stay colored. Then invert the selection and remove the color from this inverse selection.
