It depends on what site you  have joined. Generally you have to play a certain numberof games before they start giving you your rating. Some would give you a provisional rating which tends to add or decduct beyound the limit of lets say 24 points depending on your opponents rating. (Eg. You have a provisional rating of 1900 and you have been beaten by a 1400, your rating may go down by a few hundred points)

Provisional rating is a stage where your rating is still being established. When you pass the provisional stage, rating additions and deductions is already a matter of achievement. Usually you have to play around 20 games before you get a stable rating.
