Hey. I'm going to get married in two weeks in California because i will be visiting my Marine fiance and we plan to get married there but we are originally from Illinois. When i get back to Illinois, how do i change my name and what are some of the things he has to do? Should we have more than 1 copy of our marriage certificate? Does he have to give a copy of the certificate to anyone? thanks!

  1. why the h**l would anyone marry a marine???

  2. Every state has different laws. I can tell you that when I got married a year ago (in michigan however) I just took my marriage certificate to the social security office and they were able to change my last name on my soc card and after I went to the secretary of state and changed my name on my license. Hope this helps a bit, but I would check out your state laws in case it is different. Also have you checked out the website theknot.com? it's for engaged couples so you can easily plan your wedding-or most importantly not forget things and at the site you can easily access your state marriage laws. Good luck and congrats on getting married!

  3. i would get a couple certified copies of the marriage certificate, because he will definitely need a certified copy of the original to fill out paperwork after the marriage.  You need the same.  Take it to the social security office.  You can find it in the phonebook.  Just go in and fill out some paperwork. They send you a new card which you can take along with your marriage license to the DMV to get a new license.  Copies should be sufficient to send to everyone else who will need a name change (ie bill people).  He will need to enroll you in healthcare (in the army its DEERS i dont know about the marines).  and will need to supply documentation to receive married pay.  Make sure you both have a couple of copies.  You should be able to get these from the same place that you went to get your marriage license to begin with.  Good luck!

  4. Yes, have more then one copy of your marriage certificate. You, yourself will need to go to the DMV ans Social Security office to change your name with them. Then call all your credit cards and other bills and have them update your information. He will have you put on his insurance. Also, he will see about housing and stuff like that.

  5. Congrats!  Once you're married, Social Security has a website or you can go to the office in person and let them know you are married.  You will have to decide how you want your name to appear on your "new" social security card.  Such as will you keep your last name and add married name afterward or just have married name only.  I kept my last name, but your choice of course.  Then if your spouse has not shared w/ you, you will be getting another form of ID such as military dependent ID card, by the way if you don't know your spouse social security now, start memorizing, you'll need it.  Everything is done by his social security now, from getting a doctor's appointments to everything!  ID card will actually be the only thing that will give you some peace of sanity that you are you and not just your spouse social security #, by the way it will make you forget your social security #.  Good luck!!

  6. Congrats! I just got married in IL less than a year ago. I have found that it helps having another copy of your marriage license because in some cases you actually need to mail it out with forms to get something changed (such as your name on your social security card). It seems like a lot but the only places you need to change your name is; on your drivers license, your social security card, your insurance, and a change of address, if necessary, through your post office. If you're moving you'll also need to change your address on your drivers license. You can look online at each website to see exactly what you need to bring or mail to each place. Good luck with everything!
