  1. Your best bet is probably looking for your wireless router manufacturer's website.  More than likely, they have a HOW-TO that you can use to lock down your connection better.

You can probably get a better answer here if you tell us which router you have.  For example, I have a Linksys and my router uses the 192.168.1.x subnet range for my home network.  That being the case, the router can be accessed by typing http;//192.168.1.1 in my web browser and I can configure and secure my router from there.  See what I mean..?

Basically, you should at least setup your wireless router to only accept connections from your computer(s).  They have unique hardware addresses and your router can tell if they should be allowed to connect or not, depending on the settings you setup.  There is also encryption you can use, such as WEP or WPA encryption.  WEP for example has 64-bit or 128-bit long encryption keys and they act as passwords, your computers can connect but others can't.

Now, two things.  First, this isn't as hard as it sounds at first.  Once you find your router's howto and log in to the web browser interface, you'll see it's not too bad.

Secondly, the WEP, WPA, and other encryptions, as well as the MAC (hardware address) filtering I mentioned above are not 100% foolproof.  There are ways to crack the encryption and get into your wireless network anyway BUT, and this is a big BUT in my opinion; if someone knows how to setup a rouge DHCP server and all the other things that sometimes need to be done to crack into the network, odds are they won't be bothering with your connection.  There are too many wide open connections out there for them to spend so much time and energy getting into yours.  These protections will keep out 99.98% of the yahoos out there and the .02% that can get in will be out trying to crack into Citibank or something....

    Hope this helps.... G'Luck

  2. I would first recommend learning what kind of wireless cards your computers have. Some older types of cards only recognize limited types of wifi security. I would then set your wireless devices to that max security level.

WEP, WPA, WPA2 are the most used ones that don't require additional configuration tools like say a Radius server.  WEP is the oldest so more wireless cards accept this. WPA2 is one of the newer ones and so older cards may not have this as an option.

Each router manufacturer has their own way of setting up security so you should read your owner's manual to learn how to turn it on.

Remember...choose a password that is easy to remember

I have a guest room in my home and I have a card on the nightstand in there telling guests what the name of the wireless network is and what the password is.

Setting this up is easy and you'll be able to sleep better at night knowing that your home network is more secure.

  3. Go into the security settings of your wireless router and set up security/password for access there.
