I have a 2002 jetta with a turbo engine. How do you check the transmission fluid in it? I hear that when the car shifts hard and jerks alot it could be low on transmission fluid, but i have no idea where it is to check.

  1. The transmisson fluid is checked using a Factory Scanner.  At 35 degrees, transmission fluid dribbles out the hole on the bottom of the transmission.

You have two holes.  One is to completely drain the transmission and the other one is to adjust the level.

Jerking is a tell tale sign on a volkswagen that the transmission is bad.

I replaced 6 a week at the dealer.

  2. There is no where to check your transmission fluid unless you get underneath your car. They don't have dipsticks to check the fluid. I believe they have grease in them, and not fluid.

  3. Look in your owner's manual and it'll tell you how to check all your fluid levels.

When was the last time you had your transmission serviced?  This is something that needs to be done periodically and if you are having drive-ability issues then you may already have a problem.  If you look at the fluid it should be pink and thin, not dark or thick looking or have any particals in it.  Also, smell the fluid - if it smells like burnt toast then it is not good and needs to be replaced.

  4. if its an automatic there should be a dip stick on the tranny.
