Hello

To choose a background locate and select 'Personalize this page' at the top of new My Yahoo! (not Classic).

Under 'Appearance' select 'Change Color'  and choose a background theme or color, click 'Close' on the corner to exit personalization.

for avatar... they have like face/eyes, clothing, accessories, and background.  just click on background and it will show you some backgrounds
