  1. a hover mower is also a rotary mower since the blade also rotates.  The only difference is that the hover mower, hover over the grass to be cut.  A hover mower is easier to use than a rotary mower.  In a hover mower, you can move it forward or backward, left or right since the body of the mower the engine and the blade is floating.  The hover mower is usually light weight compared to the rotary mower.  The rotary mower usually has wheels therefore you work in a forward and backward/pushing and pulling motion

  2. I think the rotary does those lines in the grass and the other doesn't so it depends if you can walk in a straight line or not.

  3. a rotary mower is mainly for a really flat lawn, hovers are for more uneven surfaces.

  4. I would go with a hover.  I have a small rotary because our garden is so small I thought it would work out.  However, the grass is so fine that it just flattens it down and it doesn't seem to be sharp enough to mover any of the weeds.  It was really a waste of money.

  5. It depends how big your lawn is. If it is large go for a rotary mower (Hayter or Mountfield but other cheaper makes would be fine for small amounts of mowing). This type of mower will give you a better cut than a hover mower.  A hover mower is very useful if you have steep or very uneven parts to your lawn.

You can get stripes with a rotary mower if it has a roller. However a roller will considerably add to the weight & cost of the mower.

Choose an appropriate size mower for your lawn too. There is no point in buying an 18in (the size of the blade from one end to the other) mower if you have a modest lawn and/or lots of things to mow round.
