common land that runs up to my boundary i have looked after and would like to claim this land to enlarge my garden

  1. Squat on it. Find out the time limit is for occupying property is before you can lay claim to it. Document as much as you can . Talk to the tax collector of that county. Go to the source of your property ownership and get deed.


  2. UK. You have to have occupied the land for, (I think) 12 years,  unless the owners have been on it. after which time you may be able to claim it as yours, Check with land registry.

  3. "common land" is legally protected.

    If it just seems to be un-owned it maybe claimed as "manorial rights" by the local big landowner.

    check with the parish clerk or your local district planning office what category this land falls into.

    there may be a trust that is authorised to sell you the land. or you may be able to have an "allotment".

  4. 'Common land' is just that - you can probably use it, but you have no actual claim to it.

    Maybe ask around to the other people who have properties abutting it - and make sure that noone else has a claim to it, or if it is managed by a government agency - local, state, or federal.  

    I live in Oak Ridge, TN - so the government has a lot of green belts, and restricted areas - I have an awesome protected section of forest behind my house - a piece of the cumberland trail actually goes through it, and I can hike down a ravine to get to it.  I never have to worry about anyone developing it.

    If none of your neighbors have any objections, and there aren't any restrictions on using it, then go for it.  There is nothing better than a good crop of fresh vegetables from a garden!!!
