How do i clean a hat with out putting it in the washing machine?

i need to clean my husbands hat but he told me not to put it in the washer because it would crinkle up and get misshapen. it's just got dirt and dry wall dust on it , no stains. also, its a black DC hat.

You can buy plastic hat cases at any grocery store. They're in the laundry aisle. They keep the hat from losing its shape. They are made for baseball caps. Check out the picture below. I would try it out using a baseball cap that isn't important to you, so you can see if there's any damage. Using the gentle cycle would be best. Good luck!
