Question:

How do i clean an engine?

I want to get all the dirt and grime off my engine on my 91 Camaro RS.. i dont want to disassemble anything (unless it's small) i just need to know a good cleaner to use and if it's ok to hose the area off afterwards.... also whats a good way to the the hard to reach places?

  1. Coat it really good with engine degreaser and let it sit.  Use kerosene and a stiff brush to get any really thick - baked on stuff off.

    Cover your carb, distributor, air filter, and then use a pressure steam cleaner.

    Afterwards, pull your spark plug wires and let everything dry out real good.


  2. ENGINE BRITE degreaser at most stores, get your engine hot, shut it off spray the degreaser liberally all over the engine, let it sit a bit, then hose it off, repeat as necesarry

  3. Simple Green, but reallly wrap the coil and distributer.

  4. any auto parts store carries "engine degreaser"...warm engine spray on let sit hose off

  5. DO NOT use kerosene. This is a recipe for disaster. Buy some gunk engine brite, or simple green (more environmentaly friendly).Follow instructions on product. Apply to a warm, not hot, engine. If you have especially bad grease buildup, use a stiff bristle brush to loosen it after letting it soak. Rinse well and enjoy your clean engine.
