  1. Tools --> Accounts --> Mail.

    if it's empty, Add. Ask the rest to your ISP.

    if it's already filled with somtin, click properties, ask the rest to the ISP.

  2. Hello -

    Ok, if you need help configuring your Outlook Express to work with your ISP (Internet Service Provider), I'm going to assume a few things.  First and foremost, you have an account with an ISP.  And second, you're running Windows XP.  Windows 98, 2000, and ME are all pretty much the same.  Vista is close, so if you need help with Vista, post an additional detail and I'll tell you how to get Windows Mail setup.

    Ok, for Outlook Express on WinXP, here's the information you are going to need from your ISP.  If you don't have it yet, call up your ISP, ask for the tech support department, and ask them the following questions:

    1.  Your username (typically it's your full e-mail address)

    2.  Your password

    3.  Incoming mail server (typically pop3.YOURISP.com, where YOURISP is the domain name for your ISP)

    4.  Outgoing mail server (typically smtp.YOURISP.com, where YOURISP is the domain name)

    5.  Whether or not the outgoing e-mail server requires authentication

    6.  Whether any mail ports need to be changed.

    Ok, armed with the above info, go into Outlook Express and then from the menu bar, go to Tools, then Accounts.  It would be best to delete any mail account that has been previously set up and isn't working.

    Ok, tell it you want to create a new mail account.  It should ask for the Display Name, then the e-mail address, and then it'll want the username (question #1), password (question #2), and then the incoming and outgoing mail servers (questions 3 & 4).   If your ISP said that you need to enable authentication for outgoing email server (I only mention this due to more ISPs becoming more secure), then you will have a couple more steps to take.  After you enter the info for your incoming and outgoing mail servers, click Next, or Finish, and complete the process.

    You should be taken back to the screen that shows you which e-mail accounts have been setup.  Ok, if the answer to question #5 was Yes, then do the following, and if not, skip this part.  Highlight the account you just created and click on either Edit or Properties.  Now you'll be looking at a window with several tabs.  Go to Servers, and you'll see a check box down near the bottom that says "My Outgoing Email Server Requires Authentication", or something like that.  Check it.  Then click the Settings button to the right of it and on the little window that appears, click the "Log in using" and enter your full e-mail address and password again.  Make sure you click the "Remember Password" box and save it.

    Now, if on your question #6 your ISP says that you need to have specific email ports changed, then you'll need to go into the properties for your e-mail account again and make whatever changes they want, typically on the Advanced tab.  Usually, you don't have to mess with this too much.

    I know this looks like a lot, but it actually isn't too bad.  Good luck!  Hope this helps!

  3. the basic concepts here. just replace with your ISP provided servers.
