How do i connect a new phone line to the box in my basement?

the box in my basements that has all the phone lines coming from it has like little metal prongs coming out of it. i want to know how to add another phone line to it.

You want to connect 2 wires going to the new location.  If it is older telephone wire there will be a Green, Red, Black and yellow.  You want Green and Red.  If it is newer wire - there is a pair of white w/ blue and blue w/ white.

First - take another phone off the hook.  Ring voltage is troubling on the fingers!  Connect the end in the basement and then the other end at the jack where you want it - to the Green and Red or the T & R (tip and ring) connections.  Your phone should be active.
