How do i connect a set top box to the tv?

so far ive tried connecting my set top box using AV cable (white,red,yellow) but i can only hear sound no picture.

and id also like to know whats s-video connections are for as well as whats green blue white and red connections are for and whats this specific cable called.

Remember the 3 AV cables have to come from the same out- grouping (say they're labled "component 1") into the tv with the same colors in the video, L & R.  You may have the video into a different group or it may just not be pushed in far enough on one or both ends.

S video will do it with one cable.

Don't know the others, but it just be other inputs.  I've got 7 on my Sony....
