  1. The connection is made with a Firewire (also called IEEE1394, or iLink) cable. The first thing to find out is if your laptop has a firewire port, and if so, it's size. There is 4-pin and 6-pin. 6-pin is rare on a laptop, but common on PCs. Your camcorder will have a 4-pin port.

If your laptop has a 4-pin, then you need a 4-pin to 4-pin firewire cable, and if it has a 6-pin, then a 4-pin to 6-pin. If your laptop does not have a firewire port, then you'll need to purchase a firewire PCMCIA card to install in your laptop.

If you have to install a PCMCIA card, be sure you get the correct TYPE http://www.pctechguide.com/72Components_...  TYPE II with 6-pin ports is the most common and pretty easy to find. I recommend www.newegg.com if you prefer shopping online. There are a lot of customer reviews that'll give a good idea of the quality of the product you're buying.

  3. Firewire is the most reliable way to transfer digital video data to computers. In order to do this, however, you need at least one firewire port. If you don't have this, you'll need a PCMCIA device, or in some laptops, an Express card. Generally, the camcorder has a 4-pin port and the computer has a 6-pin port, so you'll need a 4-pin to 6-pin firewire cable which connects the two ports.
