How do i construct a flagstone pattio?

dimentions 6ft by 25 ft do i need sand as a base and what edging is required i intend 1 square foot stones.

  1. I have put in some flagstone and a concrete base works the best.


  2. I can't see how flagstones set in anything but concrete will be good.  Bluestone, thicker (2") and rectangular, could be set on a level bed of sand.  If your stones are 1 foot square, are you quite sure they are flagstone?  These are most typically irregular.

  3. We just finished adding on to our flagstone patio and we used dirt.  We also did a brick walkway and used sand.  I asked my husband why they need different bases and he said, the bricks are one size and the sand is easiest to level and fill.  The flagstone is usually different thicknesses and the dirt is easier to level to each stones thickness.  I never wanted cement because I like the cracks to fill with moss. It did take a few days to do each of these projects.   Good luck!
