At dog parks and at home, she's good. But when I take her on walks and I get near a person, she would try to jump over to them, resulting in a scary pose (front legs up in the air).

How do I stop this? I have tried taking her to the side and calming her down but it doesn't work very well.

  1. Work on your obedience training, if you're not sure how to, sign up for puppy classes at PetsMart or any other dog trainer.

If your puppy is pretty good with 'sit', what you could try doing is telling her to sit when you encounter a person on a walk. Practice with a friend before you go out on walks.

  2. My dog did the same thing and we finally took her to training classes. The trainer told us to use a choke collar.  We thought it was mean but he explained to us that in the long run it is good for the dog... he said if a dog is bad when being walked, the amount of walks will decrease, so in the long run it is good for the dog. Also, it teaches the dog that you are the leader, which could decrease other bad behavior.

  3. I am going through the same thing and its tough. Once on the show "it's me or the dog" they would have a few people with other dogs and some with small kids walk by the dog while he was on a leash. When the dog would jump or go to them the owner turns around and goes the other way. Then the owner and the dog would return and repeat until the dog was calm with other people. Eventuality the dog will understand that he only gets to meet people and other dogs when he is calm. It takes a bit of time and patience but you can try it. I hope this helps! Good luck!

  4. When your dog starts doing these things, pull the leash a little and say "No (her name)". She will eventually stop these things.

  5. You tell the person whom she is jumping on to turn their backs on her, and totally ignore her until she calms down and sits. As soon as she's quiet, give her praise and attention. Keep repeating as necessary until she gets it. Keep turning your backs to her EVERY time she jumps up. After a while she will get the point that she's not getting any attention until she's calm.

  6. hold the leash so that the dog is right next to your legs, when a person approaches pull on the leash and say a disipline word right before he tries to jump on them. most people know that the dog is just playing but when the dog gets older the habit can become deadly and aggresive so try that before it gets out of hand. practice your walk every day around people and when he finally gets past a person without a bark or attempt of a playful tackle then quickly reward him
