  1. You cannot convert volume to surface.

If you have 1 m^3, it will cover 1 m^2 to a thickness of 1 m, or 10 m^2 with a thickness of 10 cm, or 100 m^2 to a thickness of 1 cm. You need to know how thick you want to pile the material up.

Edit: structural steel in what form? "I" beams? Square beams? What is the section and dimensions of those?

Use the weight and dimensions of one piece of structural steel, and find how much room it would cover (length by width). Divide your 1980 metric tonne by the weight of an average beam to know how many beams you have. Multiply the number of beams by the room each would cover, and double the result (as you want some room around them for machine access).

  2. You can't.  One is a unit of mass, the other is a unit of area.

It would be like converting cwt to square feet.

  3. You cannot convert a weight to an area.

neither can you convert a volume (m³) to an area (m²).

Just can't do it. Like asking "how red is an inch?"

But if you know what the material is, and have more information, you may be able to do a calculation that gets you there.
