  1. Do not listen to answer # one,  IT is totally incorrect.  A mil, as stated in other answers is indeed one thousandth of an inch, and NOT 1 millimeter.

do a wikipedia search and verify if you need to!

  2. A mill or mil is a thousandth of an inch, 0.001".

It is 0.0254 millimetres or 25.4 micrometres.

The abbreviation for millimetres is mm.

    Edit:

It is also known as a "thou"

  3. "MIL" is defined as one of the following two measurements:

    - A unit of angular measurement, sometimes used in radar antennas, equal to 1/6400 of the circumference of a circle.

    - A unit of length, equal to 0.001 inch

Therefore something measured to be "17 mils" in thickness would be  0.017 inches = 0.4318 millimeters

  4. One mil is one thousandth of an inch or .0254 millimeters

  5. A mill is already a millimetre. It's just a short way of saying it. To convert it into an inch:

    1 millimeter = 0.0393700787 inch

    So 17 mill = 17 millimetres = 0.66929 inches

  6. If you mean "mil", then 1 mil equals 0.001 inch equals 0.0254mm.

    17mil equals 0.017 inch equals 0.4318mm.
