Ok I really want a parakeet. My birthday is in 10 days so maybe i could get one then but i want it this week! . So how can i convince my mom?

Also how much does a parakeet cost?

And how can i ask her? I'm nervous because she might say no.

I already have 180 dollars. Do you think that will be enough money for everything?

Thanks to everyone who will answer!

Please help!

  1. well...like a year ago i asked for a rabbit and i know thats alot different then a bird...but i was scared too, but i just asked my parents and they said no and i told them i had 200 dollars they still said no but i showed them that i could be responsible enough to take care of one...well they said maybe and thats its differnt then my parakeet and yes i do have one and then my 3 brothers have 1 each...and well they susprisenly got be one...plus parakeets are not that much and do not know for sorten how much they are. but i can tell you that my mom hates animals i have know idea why i love animals and well i guess cuz there so much money...and she only gets animals that r not that much money...i have a dog and well we can not get another one....so what im saying is just give it a try ask your parents say my birthday is coming up and i really want an animal like a parakeet i have the money to buy all things i need(180) and that should be for the cage ect. and if its okay with you could i get it sooner but i can wait till my birthday but please ill take care of it. just say something in the words hey it worked for me i got my own little dwarf rabbit named sandie, parents or who ever can susprise belive me my parents said no every time i asked but i never gave up, i showed them that i could, and 5 whole days before my birthday when i was doing my homework there on the ground was a hopping bunny so if you really want a bird then your no what to do!!!

  2. Some positives about parakeets that may help you convince your mom: they are not near as loud as other birds especially if you only have one, they are tamable, they can learn tricks, they can learn to talk (mostly the males), they are not at all expensive.

I suggest you inform yourself on budgies before you talk to your mom.  The more you know the more likely she will be to think you are truly commited to the cause.

Things you should know before you get a parakeet are:

VET: Avian vets are very expensive... the parakeet is cheap but if it gets sick you will need to have an emergency fund.  A pysical, fecal exam and blood test can easily run you $150.  Make sure you find an avian vet near you before you get your bird.  Your dogs vet will not do for a budgie.  Most breeders wil guarantee their birds for at least a couple of weeks and will give you the choice of returning them, exchanging them or waiting for them to get better.  So you don't have to worry extra $$$ that right away.

BUDGIE: Your bird will cost $10-$25 depending on where you get it... breeders are your best option because they handle the birds more and some even hand feed them.  This will make it easier to tame your parakeet.

CAGE: Your cage will run you anywhere from $30-$60 depending on where you are.  Don't get a round cage because parakeets like having corners they can back into when they don't feel safe.  Longer is better than taller for budgie cages... they tend to use the length of the top so if your cage is taller than it is long your bird will only use the smaller top of the cage anyway.

PERCHES:  Get at least one natural wooden perch with varied widths so he gets enough exercise on his feet.  Also a cement or sand perch to keep his nails in good shape.

NUTRITION:  a mix of seeds and pellets is best for your budgie.  He needs the seeds to keep the natural environment thing going... it helps him keep his beak in shape.  The pellets provide added nutrition.  Even with all that your bidgie will need FRUITS (apple, pear, apricot, banana, kiwi, mango, papaya, plums) VEGGIES (asparagus, corn on the cob, celery, grean beans, bell peppers, romaine, iceberg).  Cuttle bone is necessary for calcium.  Millet is their favorite treat ... the first day or two you should let your bird eat as much of this as possible since it may be stressed and not want his regular food.  Your bird will also benefit from cooked rice, pasta, and wheat and whole grain bread.  For protein you can give your bird hard boild egg and some types of cooked beans and even cooked chicken.

TOXIC: Many plants are toxic to birds... you should take the time to research since a bird can die in a matter of hours after coming in contact with anything toxic to them.  Fumes from most nonstick pans are also toxic for your bird so keep him away from the kitchen.  Also apple, cherry and other seeds are toxic so make sure remove all seeds before offering your bird a fruit.  Pesticides sprayed on fruit can also harm your bird so peel or buy organic.  Some metals are also toxic... I know stainless steal is safe but you should find a list of metals that are toxic for birds and keep them away from them.

WINGS:  i strongly recommend clipping your budgies wings and keeping them cliped for a while until your budgie is comfortable with you and it's new surroundings.  I have seen a bird fly into a wall and die.

HOW MANY?:  If you intend to give your bird lots of attention and you want to form a strong bond with him, it is best to only get one.  The budgies will bond to each other and not to you if they are in pairs.  If you don't have enough time to dedicate to your bird then get him a friend (same s*x is best unless you want eggs).

There is so much more you should know but I don't want to overload you... feel free to email me with any questions.

To find a breeder in your area check out this link http://www.birdbreeders.com/breedersearc...

Remember breeders will raise tamer birds and also they are not shipped all over the place to get to the petstore so there is less chance your little budgie will be sick.

Take a look at these clips.. they are very informative:

Good luck! These birds live to be up to 15years old so prepare for the long commitment.

  3. Well i'm not going to lie to you. Parakeets are the nosiest things on earth. Right now as i am typing, they are chirping. Put they aren't very costly. I got the bird for 20.00, food for about 5 and the cage we got for about 15.00 or 20.00 so i'd say you could get one. Just convince your mom to deal with all the chirping. :)

  4. Hello.

    With $ 180 . It  is enough to buy a cage , a bird of your choice ( lovebirds cost about $ 50 _ $ 70 each , cockateils cost about $ 40 and up depending the colors , parakeets cost from $ 15 _ $ 22 ) Plus food , snack .

If you really want a bird , then you should ask your mom nicely ...like ...Mom , I really really want a bird ...talk about your good grade , your helping chores , your learning to be responsible >>> promise to clean the cage of the bird ...then don't forget to give her a kiss , a hug and a thank you ( for listening and for consisdering_ thinking about your request  ) I am sure she would let you ...lol...If you don't know where to find one hand fed one, look at www.hoobly.com and find a breeder near you ( don't buy at the pet store because those would bite you and it would take a long time to bond with you . Good luck !  ( I thought I remembered that I showed you this technique before ? ! )

  5. Look up some info on them, then hint that you want one for your birthday. The next day or a few hours after that just ask her and tell her that you will pay for everything and take good care of it. Also tell her that they can learn up to 500 words and phrases and can also learn lots of tricks. Good luck!

  6. well you can tell your mom that you pay for it and you really want it and that you take care of it. I think the parakeet cost $20 to $50 The food could cost $6 to $16. The cage is $30 to $100. The rest is cheap.

  7. When i got my bird the bird was like 20 dollars (depending on what store you get it at ) The cage was like i think about 40-45 dollars and the food was $10 and i picked out 2 toys that was like $10 also. Make sure you get a big enough cage. I asked my mom after i already read about parakeets and picked a spot where the cage would go and said that she would never have to take care of my bird (and she hasent had to ) . So read up on parakeets make sure you have enough time for it with school and everything plan it all out and when your mom isnt busy or preocupied say you were thinking about getting a parakeet and have already read up on it and explain what a parakeet needs.Where you are going to put it and so on

    Good luck
