  1. Having contact lenses is a huge responsibility and your mother may feel that you are not yet ready to take on such a commitment.

So the first thing that you must show her is that you are indeed mature enough to be able to handle the responsibility that comes with having contact lenses. There are many complications that can happen when patients don't take care of their lenses properly.

Next you must figure out why exactly you want contact lenses. Is it because you don't like wearing your glasses? Do you need them just for playing sports? Do you want them just to change the color of your eye? Let your mother know why you feel like you need contacts to make you happier.

Informing your parent on your concerns is your best bet for getting her approval. Remember that she has you in her best interest so if she still won't let you, you should listen to her reasoning.

For someone your age I would recommend daily disposable lenses. These are lenses that you simply put on in the morning and can take off and throw away at night. This cuts out the need of cleaning and storing your lenses (the responsibility part). I find that parents are more comfortable with letting their teens wear contact lenses if they are daily lenses because there are less chances for complications.

Also, keep in mind that contact lenses don't replace glasses and it is very important for the contact lens wearer to give their eye a break.

Good luck with talking to your mom!

  2. I'm 16 and I was in the same situation as you. I understand how it feels and I'm very sorry to hear that.

I was just allowed to give them a go recently after years of hassling and convincing them.

Tell them that wearing contacts can benefit you in ways such as how you look on the outside, your self-esteem and the avoidance of physical damage you can receive from playing sports with glasses on.

No, contacts aren't 'unhealthy'. As long as you are determined to maintain high levels of cleanliness and be patient, you will have no problems with them. Laser surgery is more of a risk as some patients who undergo this end up with after-effects for life which cannot be regretted.

You can always go to the optometrist with her and go on a trialling period. Your optometrist will guide you on how to wear them and remove them. During this time, you can learn how to handle them and show your mum you are capable!

I wish you the best of luck! :)

  3. You should either ask your eye doctor to speak with her or find more information about children's contacts to show her and talk with her about. Don't annoy her or cry. Offer to do something to earn it, like bring up your grades or do the dishes for a month. I got contacts when I was 9 and have had them ever since. If she still won't let you then get some cute glasses and if kids tease you tell them you have glasses 'cause you're smarter than them.
