  1. Birds especially the one you want, are like (or exactly like) having a small child.  It's a 24/7 job. They require alot of attention and you must know everything you can find out about them.

If you are living with your parents, then you must be very young.  It is  onlt out of caution that they are saying no,

Get a job at a pet store and get to know how there behavior's like.

They are very difficult to care for and being so young would mean (and I am serious) no social life.

This is an animal for you when you are much older.

    Hope this helps

  2. I would start by showing responsiblilty.  You must remember to make sure that it has food and water everyday.  The paper needs to be changed at least once a week.  Birds can be messy, I am constantly vacuuming after my birds (we have a total of 10 of which 7 of them are cockatiels).   A cockatiel has a life span of 12 - 15 years.  You must be willing to accept that responsiblity for that period of time.   Also if your bird gets sick, you need to be prepared to take it to a vet.  A cockatiel, just like any other parrot, needs to be handled everyday for a minimum of a half hour, preferably longer, other wise it will no longer be social towards humans.  You have to be prepared for all of this before you spend between $75 - $150 for this bird.  Also, do you have the room for the cage?  A cockatiel cage should be at least 18" wide x 24" high.  You also should keep some toys in the cage so it won't get bored.  These are all things to consider be for making your purchase.  Just like dogs and cats, there are too many unwanted birds that end up in bird rescue or a shelter because their owner could no longer taker of them or no longer wanted them.

  4. You need to show your parents that you are responsible enough to care for a 'tiel.  Do research about the breed.  Read anything and everything about the care and handling of birds and if you are old enough, get a job in a pet store or with a bird rescue organization to get experience.  Remember, these birds live a long time and will be your responsibility the entire time.

  5. Don't forget they have a life span of 12-15 years and it is probably them who ends up looking after it. You won't be able to take it on holiday's, it is a full time job as they need company! I don't like you chances if your parent's are responsible people.

    Good Luck!
