  1. ice or frost the cake first with a thin layer of icing or frosting.  it's called a crumb coat.  The lay the fondant over the icing and press down.

I'm not fond of fondant, too sweet for me.  I like just icing.

  2. Don't use fondant, it's freakin disgusting.  Tastes like sugary cardboard.

  3. use a apricot jam or glaze on top of the cake before covering with fondant. If using jam make sure to thin it our with water or simple syrup.

Roll out the fondant to about 1/8 inch thick. make sure to roll out more than  you need.

After placing fondant over the cake lightly roll the top of the fondant with a rolling pin. This process assure the fondant is stuck to the cake.

Then start working the fondant down the side of the cake.

  4. Its basically like wrapping a christmas present. ice the cake normally then Wrap it all around the cake. And cut around the edges. It will stick its self. Most fondant does.

  5. Frost the cake with buttercream before you put the fondant on.  If you're using a crusting buttercream, you may need to spritz it very lightly with water to get the fondant to stick on.

Don't roll the fondant thinner than 1/4 inch or it will be hard to work with.  Also, grease your rolling surface with Crisco before you start, and periodically pick up the fondant to be sure it's not getting stuck.  If it is, add more Crisco.

Roll the fondant out to the diameter of your cake plus 9 inches...for example, if you're making an 8" cake you need a 17" circle of fondant.  Lay the fondant over the cake and open out any pleats or folds that form around the sides.  Then smooth the top and gradually smooth the sides.  You want the fondant to stretch enough to shape itself to the cake but not so much that it will tear.  When you have the fondant as smooth as possible, cut around the bottom edge with a pizza wheel or sharp knife.  Tuck the edge under the cake board if you want.  If you ended up with pleats or creases around the bottom edge, roll and cut a long strip of fondant to be a ribbon border, or make a ball border by rolling different sized pieces of fondant into balls and putting them around the bottom of the cake.

  6. I melt jam and make it thinner with water and then I brush the cake over before laying on the fondant.

Also, if I am using almond paste (Christmas cakes), I do the same.

It worked for me and the jam taste wasn't evident, honey could also be used.
