or is there a way you can directly connect to their computer via a internet connection?

To start the server, go to Network->Server. It will show you an IP address for internal network play. If you want to do cross internet, look up your network IP, unblock in Windows Firewall, and give that IP to your friend. To connect, go to Network, Network Options and set the port and server. Then click client and connect.
