  1. Tough position to defend.

I would suggest the approach that words have formed the basis for human interaction for centuries and that the words laid down by philosophers and other great thinkers have shaped our societies and defined appropriate human behavior.

The actions by individuals do not necessarily detract from the overall cultural norms and that a viable society is based on the words that define its laws and moral standards regardless of the actions of one of its members.

As evidence cite the Ten Commandments, the Constitution of the United States (or country of your origin),the Hippocratic Oath etc.

You will need to keep the argument centered on society as a whole and not on the individual as you wuold face a losing argument.

  2. Consider that words laid down on paper (or carved in rock) are permanent.  Actions may be performed in the heat of the moment, and may not have been what was intended. Or, what the person may have done if he had time to think about what action to take.

Also, as my Dad would say:  Do as I say, not as I do.  Meaning he drank occasionally and smoked, but we should not because he felt it was wrong "for us" but not for him.  He was right, of course.
