  1. You'll have a much easier time doing a turtle roll :)

  2. do you use your knee? i've ducked my board not often though rarely 8'6- 9'0

  3. If your longboard is thin enough you can duck dive through a breaking wave.  I do it on mine.  As for getting past the whitewash?  You want to turtle.  Some other poster explains how but left out one part - you want to frog kick your legs when under water to help pull the nose down deeper.

Pretty much there is no easy way to paddle out a longboard in big surf.  You just have to take them on the head or turtle.  Learn to time the sets as this will help you save TONS of energy.  I'll watch guys get wasted trying to paddle out mid set and I'll just cruise right by them during the lull.

Don't forget to wear a leash and on small waves, just do a pushup and let the wave pass between you and the board.

    Good luck.

  4. nobody does the "turtle roll" any more and it never really worked very well to begin with. the best thing to do is as the wave is about to hit you, paddle as fast as you can at it and at the last second do almost a push up so just your toes are touching the board and your still holding the rails. That will allow the water to flow between you and the board.

  5. You can not duck dive with a long board. You are best to try what is known as turtle rolling. You simply hold onto your board and roll over to let the wave pass over you. Other wise the only other way is to go straight over the wave and paddle hard.

  6. ROLL ON YOU BACK FOOOOOOL!

  7. I've seen a few 200+ lbs. guys duck dive their long boards in a slightly different way than the traditional shortboard duck dive.  They basically slice the board in front in the water with one rail, then jam their knee into the opposite rail.  This is very rare, and I've only seen a handful of old guys do that.

Usually, timing will get you to paddle over a wave, as well as pushing through.

Turtle-ing is definitely the way to go if you have no other option if the wave is crashing right on you.  You would be a fool to never use this, especially with a 10+ heavy single-fin.

And if it's huge, I've never lost a board (and neither has Wingnut Weaver) but holding onto the front third of the board with both hands on one side, pulling the rail, into your stomach.  This makes a "t" with you and the board.

  8. turn turtle, just roll over and hang on

  9. You flap your arms, quack like a duck then dive under the wave!!!
