How do i do this on my canon powershot a590

how do i make the background black and white but some color in the middle?

Not on this camera. It must be done in post processing using PhotoShop or other image editing software.

You can't do that in the camera, but I use Paintshop Pro to do those sort of things on my computer.

Hit the set/function button, and click over from auto to color accent. you choose the color by hitting the display button, pointing the camera at the color you want to be showing and hitting the left button.
