How do i do this sound on a guitar?

some guitarists just basically run their fingers over the strings, and it makes a cool sliding heavy distortion sound. i no you need a distortion pedal

If you use your fingers then you need a distortion pedal. Others use something called an e-bow which uses a magnet to vibrate the strings very quickly. Many times you do not need a distortion pedal when using the e-bow.
