  1. Most video recorded by camera are avi video, you may try aimersoft mac video converter, it can help you convert video to mov video for adding to iMovie on Mac, my friends recommend it to me, it's easy to use and works really nice, and here is a step by step guide about how to use it

  2. The Sony DVR-HC17 is a miniDV tape based camcorder. It has a DV port.

You need a 4-pin (camera DV port) to 6-pin (Macintosh firewire port) firewire cable. Firewire, IEEE1394a and i.Link are all the same thing.

    Computer ON.

    Camera OFF.

Connect firewire cable to camera DV port and Mac firewire port.

Connect power adapter to camera (and plug in the at the wall outlet).

Power ON camcorder. It needs to be in "Play/Edit" mode.

    Launch iMovie.

The blue screen should appear with "Camcorder connected".

Click the "Rewind" button on iMovie. The camera should respond by rewinding.

    Click stop.

Click Import and import the video.
